California Auto Insurance Minimum and Optional Coverages

Date Added: February 09, 2008 06:02:24 AM
Author:

According to a review of the California Department of Insurance Automobile Insurance Manual done on February 8, 2008 - the minimum car insurance requirements are as follows:

  • Minimum liability for death or injury per person is: $15,000
  • Minimum liability for all persons in any one accident: $30,000
  • Minimum liability for property damage in an accident: $5,000

Discussion of other coverages can be decided upon after visiting with your California insurance agent in order to make an informed decision.

Some optional auto insurance coverages you might discuss with your California insurance agent may include, but are not limited to:

  • Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist – This coverage provides liability insurance when the party at fault does not have the state required minimum liability coverage or the coverage carried by the at fault party is not sufficient to cover injuries or property damage sustained in the accident.
  • Medical Payments – A “no fault” coverage which provides for the payment of medical and similar expenses. “No fault” means the coverage pays out regardless of who is at fault for the accident.
  • Physical Damage (Commonly referred to as “Deductibles”) – The cost of repairs or the fair market value of the vehicle.

That was pretty nice piece of data. Its hard to find exactly how much you get paid for any motor accident. At least now I have some idea.

The minimums seem very low. 5 thousand for property damage? That doesn't cover much. $15,000 is what, a two day stay in the hospital and some rehab? They should reevaluate the minimum requirements.

These really do seem like very low minimums. It's hard to picture - especially in California where everything costs so much.
